5 Benefits of Walking Your Family

Did you know that you would need to walk the entire length of a football field to burn off the calories from a single M&M!

I recently started taking walks with my wife, kids and dog. I found out that I have been missing a lot. In fact, something that I have always been too lazy to do has actually turned out to be quite easy. In addition, it has had some wonderful benefits!

Break up the monotony

If your wife stays home with the kids, they will all need something new to do once you get off work. Kids can only color so many times, and moms can only read so many books. It will help them to feel rejuvenated.

Make your dog happy

According to Cesar Millan, dogs need at least 1.5 hours of exercise a day. It helps them to get into a “calm-submissive” state. This state makes your dog easier to live with, easier to control, and much happier!

Wind down

It is a known fact that taking a walk can reduce stress, anxiety, and anger. It can also build self-confidence and self-esteem. If you have worked a long day at the office, you may feel the desire to just “crash” when you get home. In fact, a short walk might actually be better for you.

Burn Calories

Most everyone wants to lose weight. Of course walking will help you to burn calories. According to the Department of Cambridge Community Development, a 150-pound person, walking at a moderate pace will burn about 132 calories in 30 minutes. It is also important that children get at least 60 minutes of activity each day in order to stay healthy.

Meet the neighbors

A funny thing that I noticed by walking around the neighborhood is that you get to socialize with some of your neighbors. I was surprised to find out that even in the 107-degree heat people would be outside working or relaxing. We would have the opportunity to chat and then continue our walk. It has been wonderful getting to know our neighborhood a little better.

I sit for a living so take it from me, 30 minutes is not that hard. You and your family will feel better and you will have fun burning off the candy you ate at the office today.
