Don't Do Dash-Damage or Hyphen-Hurt...

This post has stuff about politics and a previous relationship. My perspective has changed

Here’s a quick reminder regarding the use of dashes and hyphens:

  • Use the hyphen-minus (-) as a hyphen or a minus sign. e.g. “That dog-man ate my wife!” or “10-4.298098= 5.701902.”
  • Use the en dash (–) for a closed range. e.g. “Please read pages 3–389 by tomorrow.”
  • Use the em dash (—) for an open range or a parenthetical statement. e.g. “George Walker Bush, July 6, 1946—” or “I loved dinner—and that Elvis impersonator—tonight.”

Also remember that you should not put spaces around your hyphens or your dashes. If it looks too cramped, you’re probably using the wrong symbol.

I’d also like to add that Mary excels in the usage of the parenthetical statement. I think that if I were to write a book from a day of conversation with her, it would be absolutely filled with em dashes!
