I had a wonderful conversation with Leon Paternoster today about minimalism in web design.
I had suggested that a good way to simplify a home page was to put the main navigation into a css drop-down structure and stick it up in the corner.
He pointed out that you lose usability by doing that. I completely agree. Then I found Jakob Nielsen’s article, Is Navigation Useful? and I began to question the legitimacy of a main menu altogether.
Have you seen the menu on Useit? I hadn’t either. That’s because there isn’t one. I never noticed it because I never needed it.
Nielsen points out that users look at the content and they search. That’s all you need.
