I couldn’t think of a whole lot really useful things to do with " AJAX " until recently. I mean the whole Google Maps (among others) thing is cool and all, and everyone is going crazy about it but really it can be frustrating sometimes.
My main beef with it is that it relies heavily on the client’s computer for processing. Now maybe that’s cool for developers with the best computers out there but what about so and so with a 500Mhz Celeron processor and 190MB of RAM ? Well for them the whole Google Maps experience sucks. It takes like five minutes to load the page even on a high speed internet connection.
I know that there are a lot of uses for AJAX out there that I haven’t thought up but here’s one that really makes sense to me, and doesn’t seem frivolous. I’ve got a friend who hosts a website but can’t run server side code. He wants to do a photo gallery and he wants it to be super easy to edit. So for him a great option would be AJAX .
This post is in no way inteded to bash AJAX . It’s really to post about a cool article on 15 seconds and a way to point out a really useful thing that it can be used for.
UPDATE : I just thought I’d mention that the article that prompted this thought actually uses AJAX and ASP .NET. It wouldn’t be useful for the solution I mentioned, however, it’s worth pointing out that you don’t need server side code.
