I’ve had this theory that those stupid humongus spoilers that people put on their cars don’t really do anything. I mean, for real, shove a HUGE spoiler on some beat up Cressida and that somehow makes it a fast car?! Well, it doesn’t and heres proof. Although this section of the article is about tuned Honda Civics, I think that it applies to most cars.
So how does this apply to Honda Civics? Well, in general, nothing really helps them all that much. Consider that Civics top out in the general range of 115-130mph, a speed at which their suspension cannot make a clean turn (90mph is about the limit before force is too great to handle in any solid manner, yes even with your pricey Teins. If you wanna try to do faster than that, don’t catch anyone saying you didn’t die trying) Off of the mommy/daddy talk, do aerodynamic pieces like J’s Racing Canards, ARP Splitters, TENZO R 500ft rear wings, or stock coupe front lips do anything? The answer is, not at all. They are 99% visual, kind of a way to trick you into thinking that it actually does something, but it doesn’t. Yes, handling aid can happen in very small form, but nothing large scale that will make you outhandle a Supra while you’re whacking your revlimiter and he’s got a whole gear to go.
So there. Like I’ve always said, until you’re going 200mph in a car that weighs 1500lbs, you don’t need a spoiler (obviously those are not exact scientific numbers but you get the point). You really don’t need anything unless you just want your car to look like a race car.
